commonmodevoltageonthesignalpair.PoEexploitsthisfactbyusingtwotwistedpairsasthe
twoconductorstosupplyadirectcurrent.Onepaircarriesthepowersupplycurrentandtheother
pairprovidesapathforthereturncurrent.Whileseveralproprietarylegacyimplementationsof
PoEhave
beendeployedbyLANequipmentvendors,in2003theIEEEpublishedtheIEEE802.3af
specification,whichispartofthe802.3suiteofstandards.
TheswitchisfullycompliantwiththeIEEE802.3afstandard.Itsupportsthestandardresistor‐
baseddetectionmethod,aswellasACdisconnectcapability.Theswitchis
alsocapableof
supplying15.4wattsofpowerto96portsinnonredundantpowermode,and9.4wattsofpower
to96portsinredundantpowermode.
Powered Device Classifications (PDs)
PDsaredevicesthatreceivetheiroperating48VdcpowerthroughaneworexistingEthernet
cablefromaswitchorotherdevicethatcanprovideaPoEcompliantportconnection.This
enablesthePDtooperateinalocationwithoutlocalpower.Forexample:
DevicessuchasPoEcompliantremote
EXITsignsandPersonalDataAssistants(PDAs),
DevicesthatsupportVoiceoverIPsuchasPoEcompliantdigitaltelephones,
DevicesthatsupportWirelessApplicationProtocol(WAP)suchas securitycameras,laptop
PCs,andmanymoredevices.
Fan Management
TheG3systemsupportsthreegroupsofindependentlycontrollablefansandseveralfirmware
readablethermalsensors.Fanzonesareasfollows:
•Group1(fans1,2,and3)islocatedinthefrontleftoftheswitchtocooltheEthernet
subsystemandoptional1OMmoduleslots.
•Group2(fans8and
9)islocatedinthebackleftoftheswitchbehindGroup1tocooltheCPU
subsystem.
•Group3(fans4,5,6,and7)islocatedoneithersideofthepowerslotstocoolthepower
supplies
FanspeedsaredeterminedbythermalsensorslocatedthroughouttheG3
system.Thefirmware
samplestheappropriatethermal sensorsatregularintervals,andsetstheappropriatefanspeeds.
Fangroup1drivesairflowacrossthefrontportionofthechassis,andfangroups2and3driveair
flowacrosstherearportionofthechassis.
Forfangroup1,when
allappropriatetemperaturesensorsregistertemperaturesof50degreesC
orlower,group1fansrunat60%ofmaximumspeed.Ifsoftwaredetectsanysensorreading(on
thebaseboardoranyIOMmodule)above50degreesC,allgroup1fanswillincreaseto100%of
maximumspeed.Inaddition,
iffirmwaredetectsafailureofanyfaningroup1,allothergroup1
fanswillbeincreasedto100%ofmaximumspeed.
Forfangroup2,behaviorissimilar.Whenallappropriatetemperaturesensorsregister
temperaturesof50degreesCorlower,group1fansrunat60%of
maximumspeed.If firmware
detectsanysensorreading(ontherearofthebaseboardoranypowersupplysensor)above50
degreesC,allgroup2and3fanswillincreaseto100%ofmaximumspeed.Inaddition,iffirmwa re
detectsafailureofanyfaningroup2or
3,allothergroup2and3fanswillbeincreasedto100%of
maximumspeed.
